Embassy Theatre seismic assessment

In July 2025, a seismic assessment of Wellington's iconic Embassy Theatre confirmed parts of the building are below the 34% New Building Standard threshold for being earthquake-prone.

The building can continue to operate as normal as the council – the building’s owner – plans and carries out remedial work.

Under the NBS a building’s seismic performance rating is given based on its seismically weakest part. The Detailed Seismic Assessment (DSA) gives the building an NBS rating of 30%.
