Te Anamata ā-Kai o Tō Tātou Tāone | Our City’s Food Future is a coordinated, integrated approach to supporting a sustainable, equitable, and resilient food system in Wellington. This Action Plan came from the Resilience Strategy (2017) and is an action of the Te Atakura – First to Zero blueprint to make Wellington a zero-carbon capital (net zero emissions) by 2050.
COVID-19 proved that there was work to do to make the Te Whanganui-a-Tara food system sustainable, equitable, healthy, and resilient. As our city grows, we needed a plan to keep Wellingtonians fed in the face of civil and climate emergencies.
We partnered with mana whenua and Māori to develop the plan with their priorities, aspirations, and mātauranga. Through collaboration with Dr Jessica Hutchings and Papawhakaritorito Charitable Trust, our strategies for mahi kai and protecting soil were built around the Hua Parakore framework. We thank Te Waka Kai Ora, the kaitiaki of the framework, for gifting it to us for use in the action plan.
Our City’s Food Future is a living document, that will be reviewed every three years to ensure its relevance to our communities and current context.
True systems change will need commitment from everyone for wider impact, from central government, regional and city councils, communities, businesses, and other organisations to a whānau and household level.
We look forward to further collaborating with mana whenua and te Tiriti partners to achieve our mutual aspirations for our communities.
