Toi Manu Tautoko
Canberra Pōneke Indigenous Artist Exchange

This residency exchange programme supports a Wellington-based Mana Whenua artist to visit Canberra and an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander artist to visit Pōneke.

A successful pilot was held in 2019, where Ana Iti was selected to visit Canberra and Dean Cross was welcomed to Wellington.

After a gap due to COVID-19 and other post-COVID priorities, we're resuming the programme in 2025.

How it works

The Canberra Pōneke Indigenous Artist Exchange programme supports a Wellington-based Mana Whenua artist to go to Canberra for 4 weeks and a Canberra-based Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander artist to visit Wellington for up to 4 weeks every second year.

The programme will strengthen cultural connections between the two cities, as part of a Sister City Agreement that was signed in 2016.

Who can apply

Mana Whenua artists who reside in the Wellington region can apply. Applicants who do not reside in the Wellington region but who have strong connections to the region can also apply. All art forms will be considered.

How to apply

We're calling for expressions of interest for the 2025 residency.

If you'd like to apply, read the Call for Expressions of Interest document, complete the application form and email it to arts@wcc.govt.nz by 12 noon, Friday 9 May 2025.

About the residency

Wellington City Council and artsACT in Canberra will cover all expenses including:

  • one return economy airfare between Wellington and Canberra
  • per diem to cover living expenses for the duration of the residency
  • a small budget for research and/or project materials
  • self-contained accommodation and studio space – at Te Whare Hēra on the waterfront for the Canberra artist, and in Canberra for the Wellington artist.

Wellington City Council's Indigenous Arts Advisory Group, and artsACT in Canberra and their affiliated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Group, will determine the selection of artists.

The selected local artist must commit to working full-time on a specific research project in Canberra and fully immerse themselves in Canberra’s indigenous arts sector. On return to Wellington, they will be required to share their experiences with Wellington’s art community.
