We support a number of artist residency programmes to enable an exchange of art practices and ideas, both locally and internationally, including a series at Toi Pōneke Arts Centre, international and national programmes at Te Whare Hēra, and the annual Goethe Institut artist residency.
We support residencies in various ways, from grants through Council Funding, to providing accommodation at the Bolton Street Sexton’s Cottage, one of Wellington’s oldest homes, managed by Council. We also provide advice and guidance about developing artist residency programmes.

Past residencies
These programmes contributed to building Wellington’s international profile as a creative capital and to nurturing cultural diversity in the arts.
International residencies provide a unique opportunity for artists to immerse themselves in a new arts context, market, community and culture. The experience enables artists to articulate their practice within a global context and build knowledge, networks and partnerships that support future international arts activity. Residencies are also important periods for artistic development and reflection which may result in new and vibrant bodies of work.
