Background
In June 2022, Wellington City Council and the Wellington Tenths Trusts (Tenths) announced its agreement to end our lease of the land which is the site of the Granville Flats at 559 Adelaide Road, Berhampore. The land will be returned to the Tenths.
The Granville Flats housed 144 tenants across 107 units. All tenants were found new accommodation before February 2024.
Enabling works prior to the main dismantling and demolition works started in September 2024. This included:
- safe removal and disposal of all materials containing asbestos
- removal and disposal of all built-in joinery (for example, kitchens and bathrooms) and plumbing
- removal and disposal of all internal doors and hardware, floor coverings (vinyl and carpets) and curtains.
Current status
The demolition of the buildings is now complete. The land is now being prepared for re-use.
As the project concludes, working hours will remain the same: 8am-6pm, Monday to Friday and 8am-2pm on Saturdays. Quiet preparation will occur between 7am-8am, Monday to Friday, and 7.30am-8am on Saturdays.
Noise barriers have been placed around the site to help reduce the impact of noise to residents. Noise will be within the Council’s limits.
The project is expected to be completed before the end of 2025.
What's next
We expect to hand the land back to Tenths Trust before the end of 2025.
