This policy sets out how trade and event activities are managed in Wellington’s public places. While these activities are valued for the vibrancy, attractiveness, and diversity they bring to the city, effective management is essential to protect accessibility, pedestrian flow, public safety, and the environment.
Anyone wishing to undertake a trading or event activity on public land must obtain Council approval and comply with all relevant legislation and regulations. Recognising that public spaces are primarily for public use and enjoyment, the policy aims to balance a wide range of uses while managing potential impacts on the community and surrounding environment.
The Trading and Events in Public Places Policy 2022 replaces the Footpath Management Policy (2007) and Trading in Public Places Policy (2006).
