Hanoi, Viet Nam

Wellington’s relationship with Hanoi focuses on cooperation in the areas of education, resilience, cultural exchanges and economic development.

Hanoi is the capital and second largest city of Viet Nam. Situated in the north, it's home to an estimated population of over 5.2 million.

As the thousand-year-old capital, Hanoi is Viet Nam’s cultural, social, political and economic centre.

It is projected to be one of the fastest-growing cities in the world in terms of gross domestic product from 2008 to 2025. Industrial production is the city’s largest industry, followed by trade and tourism.

How the relationship began

Mayor Wade-Brown visited Hanoi in February 2015, followed by Mayor of Hanoi’s reciprocal visit to Wellington later that year.

A memorandum of cooperation between Wellington City Council and Hanoi People’s Committee was signed during the visit which focused on creating stronger ties in resilience, education, cultural exchanges and economic development.

Highlights
