The number of councillors for each ward is determined by the estimated resident population of each ward and the total population of the city as a whole. For the first time in the 2022 elections, one councillor will be elected from a Māori ward.
The list includes:
- One mayor, who is elected by all the city's voters
- One councillor for Te Whanganui-a-Tara Māori Ward
- Three councillors for Takapū/Northern General Ward
- Three councillors for Wharangi/Onslow-Western General Ward
- Three councillors for Pukehīnau/Lambton General Ward
- Three councillors for Motukairangi/Eastern General Ward
- Two councillors for Paekawakawa/Southern General Ward
