Free bins for events

Borrow bins for organics, mixed recycling, glass recycling and rubbish to use at events held in Wellington City.

We have wheelie bins and hoods available for use at Wellington City events of all sizes.

The bins are colour coded as follows:

  • green bin for organics – such as food scraps, compostable packaging, florist green waste
  • blue bin for glass recycling – clean bottles and jars
  • yellow bin for mixed recycling – such as clean plastic, cardboard, paper, and tins/cans
  • red bin for general rubbish.
Four bins with hoods in four colours: yellow, green, red and blue.
You can borrow wheelie bins with hoods included.

The bins have a capacity of 240L, and are 75cm wide, 60cm deep and 106cm high.

Triangular hoods can be borrowed separately if you already have bins or are using bins supplied by a collection provider. Hoods will fit over all standard 240L wheelie bins and are 60cm, 68cm deep and 37cm high.

Four hoods for bins in four colours: yellow, red, green and blue.
You can borrow hoods only if you already have bins.

You can request to borrow up to 15 bins and up to 30 hoods in each colour. Simply pick and choose what is required for your event.

Conditions

  • Bins and hoods must be collected and returned to the Southern Landfill site and be in a clean condition when returned.
  • You must organise for the collection and disposal of all waste streams collected at the event. This can be done by waste collection providers.

Tips for using the bins

  • Place bins together in ‘stations’ – a group with recycling, composting, glass, and rubbish bins together. Single recycling bins will likely become contaminated with rubbish and vice versa.
  • Put the bins where they are most required – such as areas where people will be eating or drinking and exits.
  • Put the stations within sight of each other – if people can see the bins and don’t have to go out of their way to find them, they are more likely to use them instead of littering.
  • The bins should be monitored by at least one person for the duration of the event to make sure they are used correctly. Find out what materials are acceptable for recycling and what materials are acceptable for composting: (or check with your collection provider)
  • Not having the right amount bins, or not emptying them often enough may lead to overflow and littering. If bins will need emptying multiple times, use liners or swap out full bins for empty ones.
