Multi-unit developments of 10 or more units are not eligible for recycling crates, bags or wheelie bins for the following reasons:
- Numerous rubbish bags and/or recyclables to be collected would create health and safety hazards for pedestrians, people with prams and in wheelchairs, and for the collection truck operator.
- With such a large number of rubbish and recycling receptacles to collect, the collection truck would be stationary for a long period of time affecting traffic flow.
- Contaminated bags aren't collected by the company that sorts our recycling materials. Often these bags aren't cleared by the offending household as they aren't easily identifiable. This creates further health and safety issues, and complaints from residents and the general public.
- Ultimately, it's left to the Council to clean up, which results in a significant and unnecessary cost.
The body corporate or landlord should be responsible for the disposal of waste from multi-units.
New multi-unit developments are required to make adequate provision for the management of all waste, recycling and organic waste generated on site.
