The walkway starts at the Brooklyn Wind Turbine and extends along exposed ridgelines to the south coast. It has stunning views over southern Wellington and rural land to the west.
It is important to plan your trip carefully before attempting this walk. The walk is exposed, particularly in southerly winds, and there is very little shelter on much of the route.
The walkway is 8.7 kilometre long and takes between 3- 4 hours to complete. It's steep in some places so it's easier to start at the Wind Turbine and walk down to the coast.
The walk connects with the Paiwhero / Red Rocks Coastal Walk which is an additional 4 kilometre (1 hour) back to Owhiro Bay Parade.
Directions
From Wind Turbine car park follow marked trails: initially Windmill until you meet Car Parts Extension, then right onto Barking Emu, then follow Red Rocks Track along ridges until you get down to the coast. The walk does not climb to the top of Hawkins Hill but turns off the main ridge north of the Radome.
Highlights of the walkway include spectacular 360° views of the city, harbour, mountain ranges and the sea, and starts near the Zealandia fenceline.
