Playground refreshes

The Council carries out a scheduled programme to refresh playgrounds across the city. This makes sure our facilities meet current safety standards, and offer a fun play experience for our younger residents.

Recently refreshed play areas

Burbank Crescent play area, Churton Park

The renewal included:

  • Transferable carousel
  • Swing set, with a basket seat, 1 belt seats and 1 inclusive seat
  • Play module with slides and climbing opportunities
  • Concrete path connecting to the play area
  • Springer accommodating up to 4 users
  • New safety surfacing
  • Picnic tables and rubbish bin
  • Refurbished bench seats

The construction was completed in August 2024.

The renewal included:

  • Carousel
  • Swing set, with 2 belt seats and 2 infant/toddler seats
  • Tower unit with 2 slides
  • 4 square ball game area
  • Synthetic safety surfacing for all-weather use of the play equipment
  • Fencing around the play area & a section in the kick-around area
  • Picnic tables, bench seats & rubbish bins
  • Shade sail, which is to be reinstalled prior to summer.

The construction was completed in July 2023, but we had to wait for the land to be vested from the developer to the Council.

Te Aro Mahana

The new play space has been designed as a series of interconnected play areas within a maritime and coastal landscape theme. Mana whenua - Taranaki Whānui ki te Upoko o te Ika has gifted the new play space the name Te Aro Mahana. The name acknowledges the site’s enduring connection to Te Aro Pā by remembering the warmth and sense of belonging for Taranaki iwi to their ancestral land.

The refresh included:

  • Bespoke lighthouse with 2 slides
  • Shade sail
  • Hinaki (fish trap) climbing equipment
  • Bespoke waka crafted by artist Matthew McIntyre-Wilson (Taranaki, Ngā Māhanga, and Titahi)
  • Talk tubes
  • Inclusive carousel
  • Swing set with a basket swing, inclusive seat, infant seats and belt seats
  • Talk tubes
  • Themed safety surfacing designed by artist Matthew McIntyre-Wilson
  • New furniture
  • Amenity planting
  • Communication boards in English and Reo are still to be installed

Botanic garden ki Paekākā play area

Following a two-stage public consultation process, a themed design was developed, referencing bees and the flora they pollinate.

The refresh included:

  • 2 seated flying fox
  • Monkey bars
  • Bespoke tower with 3 slides
  • Junior module
  • Seesaw
  • Swing set with a basket swing, inclusive seat, infant seat and belt seats
  • Musical panels
  • 2 bee springers
  • Timber log climbing unit
  • Transferable carousel
  • Talk tubes
  • Themed safety surfacing
  • 3 shade sails
  • New furniture
  • The upper play area is fully fenced
  • Amenity planting
  • Communication boards in English and Reo

The refresh included:

  • New safety surfacing

  • New junior module with slide
  • New swings which includes an inclusive seat
  • New dual slides down the bank
  • Replacement of the old non-compliant helicopter with a bespoke model
  • Two shade sails and a shelter
  • Wehopper spinner
  • Albatross seesaw
  • Inclusive carousel
  • New flying fox
  • Adjusted fencing to better control access onto Cockayne road

  • Senior play module with tube slide
  • Refurbished bowl spinner
  • New swing sets
  • New safety surfacing
  • Amenity planting
  • New picnic tables 
  • New asphalt path running through the play area.

The construction was completed in July 2023.
