Residential ratepayers on low incomes may be eligible for a rates rebate of up to $790 for the current rating year. You can apply for a rebate for the current rating year only.
The rates rebate process and eligibility requirements are managed by the Department of Internal Affairs. We assess and approve rates rebate applications on their behalf.
Check if you're eligible for a rebate
Eligibility and how much you get depends on:
- the total amount of rates you pay
- how many dependants live with you
- your total household income before tax
- the ownership of your property
- your living situation.
Find out more about who is eligible to get a rates rebate on the New Zealand Government website.
Income threshold
The rebate is for residential ratepayers on low incomes. However, you still may qualify for a rebate with a higher income figure if you have dependants, or if your rates are high.
To apply for the 1 July 2024–30 June 2025 rating year, you need to provide your total household income before tax for the 1 April 2023–31 March 2024 tax year.
