Strengthening your building

If your building is confirmed to be earthquake-prone you’ll need to carry out seismic work to your building within a specified time frame.

Engaging an engineer to strengthen your building

Any strengthening work or partial demolition carried out on your earthquake-prone building requires the involvement of a Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng).

Having to carry out seismic work early

If you’re doing building work unrelated to strengthening you may be required to carry out strengthening early.

Extensions of time to complete seismic work

Buildings that had old ‘yellow notices’ or are category 1 heritage buildings may be able to apply for an extension of time.

Exemptions from having to carry out seismic work

Where a building poses a low risk you may be eligible for an exemption from having to carry out seismic work.

Strengthening or demolition works likely triggers the requirement for building and/or resource consent.
