Have you ever wondered what the black tubes laid across the road are for? They help us undertake vehicle surveys all over Wellington's road network each year.
We record the number, the speed and the classification of vehicles which drive over it for usually a week.
Some common examples of how we use this data include helping road workers decide the best times to work on the road to cause the least disruption, as an input for our traffic engineers to implement effective road safety initiatives, and for our road maintenance team to forecast maintenance and prioritise annual work programmes.
