Sometimes we close roads and restrict parking in order to host events around the city.

This page is regularly updated as new events and road closures are approved.

Newtown Festival – Sunday 2 March

Road closure:

5am to 9pm, Sunday 2 March. Postponement date Sunday 6 April 2025.

  • Riddiford Street (between Mein Street and Rhodes Street)
  • Constable Street (between Riddiford Street and Daniell Street)
  • Hall Street (between Riddiford Street and Hall Avenue)
  • Rintoul Street (between Riddiford Street and Millward Street)
    The segment of this Rintoul Street closure from Colombo Street to Riddiford Street begins on Saturday 1 March 2025 at 6pm to 11.30pm
  • Colombo Street (from west side of Manley Terrace to Rintoul Street)
  • Manley Terrace (all of Manley Terrace)
  • Constable Street (between Riddiford Street and Daniell Street)
  • Emmett Street (all of Emmett Street)
  • Green Street (all Green Street)
  • Wilson Street (from in front of number 21 to Riddiford Street including the off-street public carpark)

The Wilson Street closure extends to 11.30pm Sunday 2 March 2025.

The rest of Wilson Street to Daniell Street will be two ways:

  • Newtown Avenue (all of Newtown Avenue)
  • Normanby Street (from in front of 14 to Riddiford Street)
  • Donald McLean Street (all of Donald Mclean Street)
  • Ferguson Street (from in front of number 15 to Donald McLean Street)
  • Gordon Street (all of Gordon Street)
  • Gordon Place (all of Gordon Place)
  • Florence Street (all of Florence Street)
  • Arney Street (all Arney Street)

The following closures begin at 11am, Saturday 1 March 2025 and extends to 11.30pm, Sunday 2 March 2025:

  • 9 Colombo to Rintoul Street
  • Gordon Place closure from in front of number 7 to the end of Gordon Place
  • Donald McLean laneway at 5 Donald McLean Street
  • In front of 17 and 19 Newtown Avenue

Proposed temporary one-way traffic and bus route during the Newtown Festival closure:

  • Daniell Street - from Constable Street to Mein Street becomes one way north as the Festival bypass towards the city
  • Owen Street - from Mein Street to Constable Street becomes one way south as the Festival Bypass from the city

Pride Parade - Saturday 8 March

Road closure:

  • Tennyson Street (Tory Street to Cambridge Terrace), 12pm - 7pm
  • Dixon Street (between Taranaki Street and Victoria Street), 3pm - 11pm
  • Lower Cuba Street (between Manners Street and Wakefield Street)

Rolling road closure:

7am, Saturday 8 March - 7am, Sunday 9 March 2025

Tennyson Street to Tory Street. Turn onto Courtenay Place, move toward Taranaki Street, cross the intersection at Taranaki Street and Courtenay into Dixon Street.

  • Cuba Street (between Arthur Street/Karo Drive and Wakefield Street)
  • Manners Street (Taranaki Street and Victoria Street)
  • Marion Street (lower end, between Ghuznee Street and Swan Lane)
  • Dixon Street (between Taranaki Street and Victoria Street)
  • Eva Street (off Dixon Street)
  • Garrett Street (off Cuba Street)
  • Egmont Street (between Ghuznee Street and Victoria Street - restricted access)
  • Leeds Street (off Ghuznee Street)
  • Inglewood Place (between Taranaki Street and Dixon Street)
  • Abel Smith Street (between Taranaki Street and Victoria Street)
  • Wigan Street (Western section off Abel Smith Street)
  • Kensington Street
  • Kelvin Grove
  • Swan Lane
  • Furness Lane
  • Lukes Lane
  • Victoria Street slip lane

There will be a lane closure on Vivian Street from 5pm, Saturday 29 March 2025 to 5am, Sunday 30 March 2025 to allow for safe passage of pedestrians to cross at key times.
