Child car seat checks

Wellington City Council has partnered with New Zealand Police and Whānau Āwhina Plunket to check car seats for our tamariki in Pōneke.

Car seat being checked by some of the Council's technicians.

Car seats, known officially as "child restraints", need to to be installed correctly in vehicles to keep children safe. With monthly checks conducted by Council and Police in 2023–24, over 50% of child restraints were not installed correctly.

For more information on car seats, go to the Waka Kotahi website where you can:

  • check which standard your child restraint meets
  • watch video guides for installing your child's car seat
  • find a child restraint technician.

Child restraints have an expiry date – find out how to read a car seat date stamp on the SitTight website.

Drop-in clinics

We're hosting monthly drop-in clinics with Plunket, where you can get your car seat checked and have your questions answered by our trained technicians.

The next session is: 1pm–3pm, Tuesday 24 September at Johnsonville Plunket Clinic.

Alternatively, you can book an appointment with one of our child restraint technicians. Email roadsafety@wcc.govt.nz for details.
