This fund supported the creation of community spaces and venues where services and activities contributed to social wellbeing.

Funding range: The maximum grant available was up to 30% of the annual rental or lease cost, capped at $15,000. See past allocations (111KB PDF).


About the grant

The fund supported venues that provided multi-purpose community spaces used to run activities meeting the needs of local communities. A key requirement was that community development and capability building were core functions of the applicant organisation.

Organisations were required to have a management committee to oversee the facility. Preference was given to projects supporting multiple user groups.

Applications could also be made for specific cost areas related to venue use.

Eligibility and criteria 

This fund assisted with the creation or maintenance of spaces used to deliver services and activities aligned with social wellbeing goals.

to be eligible:

  • The venue needed to function as a multi-purpose space serving community needs.
  • Community development and capability building had to be central to the applicant organisation’s work.
  • The organisation needed a dedicated management committee actively managing the facility.
  • Applicants were required to have a membership of at least 20 active members (excluding the committee), with a membership list available for public inspection.
  • There had to be a demonstrable need for the facility, with no similar Council-supported venues in the local area.
  • Organisations could only receive funding for two consecutive years.
  • The maximum grant was 30% of the annual lease or rental cost, or $15,000 – whichever was less.
  • Preference was given to venues supporting multiple user groups.

Projects also needed to meet the Social and Recreation Fund Criteria.
