With e-scooters and e-bikes available for hire, it’s easy to make low carbon transport choices in Wellington.
Scooters have become a popular way to make short trips since the introduction of public e-scooter share services in 2019. They’re cheap to ride, environmentally friendly, fun to use, and can provide health benefits.
From February 2023, a public e-bike share scheme is also being trialled.
This provides more options and will allow people to more easily go further.
Under the trial, and subject to demand, existing operators Flamingo and Beam both plan to have up to 150 e-bikes available on Wellington streets, starting with 50 each.
The e-scooters and e-bikes are hireable, locked and unlocked via apps.

Information about share schemes
Local providers Flamingo and Beam were granted three-year licences from Monday 1 March 2021.
Flamingo has been operating in the city since 2019. Singapore-based Beam also operates in Auckland as well as cities in Australia and Asia.
The two were selected after an evaluation of four company proposals submitted to the Council in early 2021. This followed an 18-month trial of the e-scooter scheme, which finished on 31 December 2020.
Kōrau Tūāpapa, our Environment and Infrastructure Committee, unanimously approved trialling a public e-bike share scheme in December 2022. The trial will be evaluated in mid-2023.

The licences to operate and code of practice were amended in 2023 to reflect the Committee decision, and include permissions to operate e-bikes on a trial basis.
In April 2024, the current Micromobility providers were approved to continue to operate in Wellington at Kōrau Tūāpapa, Environment and Infrastructure Committee (9.98MB PDF), with the current licences coming up for renewal in March 2026.
