Free books at Wellington City Libraries pop-up

Wellington City Libraries (WCL) are running a pop-up library on the corner of Willis Street and Bond Street, where people can stop by during their lunch breaks to nab a free book, magazine, or map, or learn about library resources.

The pop-up will be open until the end of January and will be there every Tuesday to Thursday (weather dependent) from 11am to 2pm.

The aim of the pop-up is to encourage people to learn more about what libraries offer and some of the awesome services run by WCL.

Each day, WCL staff will be putting out new books so it’s a real luck of the draw to what you can find.

All the books are either overdrawn, or excess copies of books, says Librarian Alayne Dick.

“A lot of the books are extra copies from things like our book club, where we get a lot of copies because the books are popular.”

While books have been flying off the shelf, Alayne says that maps are surprisingly popular.

“They’ve almost been more popular than books. They’re old regional New Zealand maps of small towns, so people look for the towns they’ve visited or come from. We’re nearly out of them so that shows how much people have been loving them.”

On top of getting free books, people can do their best to figure out the riddle of the day, which is run by Library Fiction Specialist Neil Johnstone. Alayne says they’ve been a hit.

“The highlight has been Neil’s riddles and jokes. People visit us every day to just ask for a new riddle!”
