The new panel will be instrumental in delivering the changes to make sure Wellington’s core transport infrastructure is a safe, resilient, and reliable network. The programme will deliver safety programmes, transitional cycleway projects, and Let’s Get Wellington Moving projects creating better walking and biking in Wellington.
The unique contractor panel also aims to drive local employment, increase local business capacity and capability by making sure local work is being given to locally owned businesses, including Māori-owned businesses. At least 20 percent of work that is sub-contracted will be to Māori and Pasifika contractors.
Council’s Manager Transport & Infrastructure Brad Singh says it’s important to us that through our procurement processes, we’re raising the bar to create positive outcomes for our city.
“By creating this new contractor panel, we can help diversify the infrastructure sector and support the growth of smaller contractors. Ultimately, this will lead to a more stable and competitive market long-term for Wellington, and by association, the national road infrastructure market.”
“We want to be able to work more collaboratively with our contractors so we can streamline our processes, find efficiencies, and minimise disruption for Wellingtonians,” adds Brad.
“Our transport network connects all of us, whether we walk, bike, bus or drive; and making sure it is a safe, resilient and reliable network supports us to have an efficient, productive and an environmentally sustainable economy.”
The panel is currently made up of nine contractors, including five head contractors and four sub-contractors. For three of the new panel members, this is their first time engaging with government directly, two of which are Māori-owned businesses.
This work aligns with the Wellington City Council's Procurement Strategy.
